What is the goal of Multi-Sensory therapy? Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) is a Dutch concept and philosophy of care that stemmed from the blending of the Dutch words ‘snuffelen’ and ‘doezelen’ meaning to seek out or explore and to doze or snooze. Multi-Sensory therapy provides sensory experiences using lighting effects, colour, sound, scents, and vibration/touch. It creates a soothing and relaxing environment through sensory stimulation. What are the aims of Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) therapy? To create a safe and comfortable environment offering individuals with special needs and challenging conditions the autonomy to engage and satisfy their perceptual needs. Because it does not rely on verbal communication, Multi-Sensory therapy can reach those who would otherwise be almost impossible to connect with. Moreover, this client-centered philosophy can greatly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and other limiting conditions.
